The relationship between functionality of children with cerebral palsy and their parents' musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and quality of life

It is known that parents who have children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) can be adversely affected both physically and mentally while providing care for their child. However, in this study, it was aimed to reveal the relationship between the physical and emotional states of parents with children with CP and the level of functionality of their children. The aim of this study is to evaluate the functionality of children with CP and to evaluate the relationship between musculoskeletal pain, fatigue and quality of life of their parents. Children between the ages of 4 and 18 who were diagnosed with CP and who could stand and walk were included in the study. If the parents were the person responsible for the child's daily decision-making and care, and the children diagnosed with CP lived with them, they were included in the study. Some demographic information regarding their age, education level, employment status and marital status were collected from the parents before completing the main questionnaires. Gross Motor Function Classification System (KMFSS) to classify the functional status of children with CP, Pediatric Functional Independence Measurement (PFBÖ) to assess functionality, Pediatric Balance Scale (PDS) to assess functional balance in activities of daily living, Timed Stand Up & Walk to assess functional walking time Test (SKYT) was used. In parents, the Extended Nordic Musculoskeletal Pain System Questionnaire was used to assess musculoskeletal pain, the Fatigue Severity Scale was used to assess fatigue, and the Nottingham health profile (NSP) was used to assess quality of life. As a result; A correlation was found between the functional measurement values of individuals with CP and the musculoskeletal pain status of the physician (p<0.05). There was no relationship between the functionality of individuals with CP and the family's quality of life and consumption level. In addition, the residential musculoskeletal system is seen to be higher than aching area restrictions, life limitation and bedspreads. We think that this study will be beneficial for the improvement of the physical and mental well-being of the parents as well as the care planning of those with CP. November 2022, 64 Pages.
