Vocabulary analysis on Sermet Muhtar Alus's work "Eating and Drinking in the Past Days of Istanbul"

After Ahmet Rasim, Sermet Muhtar Alus, one of the important names in Turkish literature who continued the local color realisim in the period until 1952, used his colorful and powerful style by including people from all strada of life in Istanbul at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century in his works. He is a writer who explains things in detail with his observation skills. In this study, which we prepared as a master's thesis, we aim to reveal the Turkish of the period, based on the language characteristics of the author, by examining the vocabulary of the work "Eating and Drinking in the Past Days of Istanbul", which brings together the writings of Sermet Muhtar Alus about the food and drink culture of Istanbul, and to reveal the Turkish of today's Turkish language. It is aimed to contribute to the vocabulary and to catch clues about the social life, material and spiritual culture of the period with the identified vocabulary elements. In this regard, first of all, information is given about the life, art and works of Sermet Muhtar Alus. As a result, the definition and scope of vocabulary are discussed, and the elements contained in the vocabulary continue to be explained in detail. In addition, vocabulary elements in the work (foreign words, dioms, proverbs, local sayings, reduplications, slang, formulaic words, terms and nouns) are included. Some of the idioms, proverbs, local sayings, formulaic expressions, foreign words, terms and names were evaluated through dictionary study. As a result, the vocabulary of the period was tried to be brought to light, based on the writings of Sermet Muhtar Alus, who mirrored a period.
