Serum Adiponectin levels in acute ischemic stroke and its probable role on ischemic stroke

Abstract (EN)

Ischemic stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide. Ischemic strokes are most often caused by thrombotic processes. In the last years works, the proofs showing some other factors could play a role except the classical risk factors in the process of atherosclerosis have increased.Similar to collagen, adiponectin is a plasma protein which is produced by adipose tissue. Adiponectin is a protector in the early atherosclerosis processes due to its anti-atherogenic and anti-inflammatory features and it regulates glucose and lipid metabolisms by means of tissues which are sensitive against insulin. Adiponectin makes cleaning glucose and free adipose acids easy out of plasma and restrains glucose producing in the liver. Our aim is to compare the serum levels of patients who have ischemic strokes which are the important consequences of adiponectin and atherotrombotic events with the serums of healthy people and to explore the serum adiponectin level in the ischemic stroke patient groups and also to determine whether these hormone levels could be an affecting risk factor for the ischemic stroke or not.50 patients who were put in hospital with the acute ischemic stroke diagnose and 30 healthy people voluntarily were taken into this work. Those who were in the patients group were categorized considering their diabetes mellitus autobiography. The serum adiponectin levels between the patients group and the control group were diabetics and nondiabetics in the patients group and also compared according to the size of the ischemic areas in the TOAST (Trial of Org 10172 in Acute Stroke Treatment) category in the patients group. The difference of serum adiponectin levels between the patients group and the control group and between the diabetic patients group and nondiabetic patients group wasn?t statistically meaningful (p>0.05). According to the TOAST category, the difference between serum adiponectin levels of patients who have small and big infarct area wasn?t statistically meaningful in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients (p>0.05).Consequently, in this work we discovered that serum adiponectin levels in the patients with acute ischemic stroke weren?t different according to the normal controls. And thus we had an opinion that adiponectin molecule didn?t play an importanat role in the ischemic stroke.
