Şevkani's method of interpreting Quran

The purpose of this study is to search for Şevkani?s method of interpreting Quran, probable contributions and developments presented by Şevkanî on the field of Quran tafseer.To make the major issues of the study clear, we initially examined all parts of his tafseer of Quran in general. We applied to other sources belong to Şevkanî in order to make detailed search for the study. We used exemplification method to explain main ideas presented in his tafseer of Quran. Especially, the topics mentioned in his tafseer and in the Quran were compared with other sources in this field.After viewing the effects of Yemen?s political, social, religion and cultural life on his tafseer of Quran, at first chapter, we reveal his analyzing method of verse and sure of the Qoran. We evaluated his way of interpreting Quran by looking into the sources and major parts, which were used in the tafseer. At second chapter, we concentrate on Şevkanî?s view of the Quran as a source of supernal Islamic theology and pray. We also concentrate on his approach to Quran sciences. At third chapter, we analyzed his tafseer of Quran with the sciences of Islamic theology, Islamic law, linguistics, religious orders and mysticism.We revealed that Şevkanî used very different types of sources in preparing for his tafseer. He also used the methods of rumor (rivâya) and discernment strongly in his tafseer of Quran. He applied to the perspectives of predecessor while studying the issues of faith. He aimed to be far from advising and imitating case law on the field of Islamic theology. He viewed all approaches based on imitations as differentiation from the origin of Islamic religion (bid`at). Parallel to this, he presented so many ideas opposite to some mystic understandings.As a conclusion, this study showed us that Şevkanî?s tafseer is very regular and systematic as a form. He revealed a very qualified brief study. He dealt with Quran sciences skillfully and revealed new original views to the understandings of Islamic theology. He emphasized in many subjects on his tafseer of Quran, but he did not show the resources at some parts of the tafseer. In addition, he included some weak hear says in his tafseer. He also used apocrypha readings of Quran. He was extremely opposite to imitating sect and mysticism. Because of all these reasons; he was highly exposed to several criticisms by scientific environments.Keywords: Quran, Tafseer, Verse, Sure, Mysticism, Case Low, Religious Orders.
