The sexual dysfunction in individuals with TYPE II diabetes mellitus

This study was conducted to evaluate the sexual dysfunction in individuals with type II diabetes mellitus. The study sample consisted of 280 individuals, 141 of whom were women and 139 men, who had attended to Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases, Diabetes Clinic of Akdeniz University Hospital between May-June 2014. Data was collected by using personal information form containing socio-demographic characteristics and questions regarding sexual functioning, Female Sexual Function Index and International Index of Erectile Function. Descriptive statistics such as frequency distribution, mean and standard deviation were used to define the sampling. Internal consistency was used for Cronbach's alfa and the methods used for the tests were as follows; t test, Mann-Whitney U, Chi-square test and Fisher' exact test. 95% significance level was used in order to determine the differences in the analysis (α=0.05 tolerance). In our study, 50.4% of individuals were found to be women, 49.6% men and 46.1% of women were in the 46-55 age group and 54% in the 56-60 age group. Mean age of women was 51.60 and of men was 54.46. In the group, 97.9% of women and 99.3% of men were married and all the individuals had a partner. 58.2% of women and 38.8% of men were primary school graduates, 68.1% of the women were housewives and 63.3% of men were retired. Medical nutrition therapy in women was 90.8% and 96.4% in men; use of oral antidiabetic was 83.7% for women, 83.6% for men. The rate of insulin use in women was 31.5% and 36.0% in men. As for the most frequent diabetes related complications, neuropathy came first with 41.8% in women, and retinopathy with 34.5% in men. HbA1C averaged 7.20% in women and 7.78% in men. Treatment compliance rates were found to be moderate, %48.9 in women and %51.1 in men. In the study, the rate of sexual dysfunction was found to be 84.4% in women. The most affected areas were sexual desire (73.8%) and arousal (48.9%). Erectile dysfunction in men rated 90.6%. The most affected areas were satisfaction and orgasmic function rated 76.3% and 25.2% respectively. 55.4% of the men had moderate erectile dysfunction, of 33.8% mild and of %7.2 severe. Hypertension, doing housework, exercise, depression, sexual dysfunction, with itching in the genital area were found to be a significant difference with sexual dysfunction in women. Neurological problems, blood glucose, the book as a source of information / brochures / booklets / with newspaper and his family chose were found to be a significant correlation with sexual dysfunction and erectile dysfunction in men.
