Development of Stoneware Bodies with High Clay Content of Sedimental Material Around the Seyhan Barage Lake

Abstract (EN)

In this research, the possibilities of using the material with high amount of clay content obtained from the vicinity of Seyhan Dam Lake in Adana province in stoneware were investigated. By selecting one of the two commercial clays in a reference stoneware mud, the amount of clay in the recipe was gradually reduced by 10-100 %, and the suitability of the material for use in the stoneware mud recipe was investigated by adding the material with high clay content obtained from the Seyhan Dam Lake environment in the amount of the decreasing ratio in the recipe. The prepared test clays were fired at 1210℃ for 58 minutes in a roller kiln under industrial conditions. Tests for % water absorption, % firing shrinkage, strength and CIE L*a*b color values of the test samples prepared with the additive ratios of commercial clay in decreasing % were performed. As a result, a decrease in the water absorption % values and an increase in the % firing shrinkage and fired strength values were observed as the increased additive ratio of the material with high amount of clay content taken from around Seyhan Dam Lake. The composition colors were observed as gray, light gray and beige depending on the amount of additive. As a result of the experiments, it was seen that it can be used without causing any problems at 1210℃ in artistic studies with clay from around Seyhan Dam Lake instead of commercial clay. In industrial works, the additive amount should be controlled above 50% due to the risk of thermal deformation.
