The perception of civilization in the poetry and prose of Sezai Karakoç, Abdullah et-Tayyib and T.S. Eliot

In this study, the perception of civilization in the context of comparative literature was examined based on the works of Turkish poet Sezai Karakoç, American-British poet Thomas Stearns Eliot and Sudanese poet Abdullah et-Tayyib. Considering the similarities and differences they present on the perception of civilization; it is discussed how they affect the societies they belong to. By examining the paths these three names followed in the fields of literature, thought, social life and education, the perceptions of civilization in their works were determined. It should be emphasized that the civilization perceptions of these three poet-thinkers are of great importance. The importance of the poets' perception of civilization stems from the periods in which they lived. Because the changes in the way of thinking, psychological disorders, complexities of social life, the development of technology, dominant currents of thought, modernism, postmodernism, materialism, anarchism, atheism, communism, and other philosophical movements since the 19th century have affected people's perceptions of civilization. For this reason, the works of these three names are perceived as the reconstruction of their way of life and efforts to establish a new order in the world. The opinions of those who can interpret the current problems and give direction to their people are of great importance. This study proves the importance of the three poets' perceptions of civilization and its impact on their societies. It was determined that these poet-thinkers reflect their perceptions of civilization according to their beliefs and the awareness they created was tried to be revealed. On the one hand, it was determined that the works of Sezai Karakoç and Abdullah et-Tayyib tried to resurrect and build the Islamic civilization, on the other hand, it has been proven that Thomas Stearns Eliot tried to re-establish the Christian civilization, which he accepted as right in his works. In this comparative study, it has been determined that subjects such as culture, religious thought, belief, geography, history, and tradition play an important role in the formation of the civilization perceptions of Sezai Karakoç, Thomas Stearns Eliot and Abdullah et-Tayyib.
