Abstract (EN)

Smoking is an important health problem due to the diseases and deaths it causes. In our study, it was aimed to evaluate the smoking cessation status and the factors affecting it with the Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale of the people who applied and were referred to the smoking cessation clinic to quit smoking. The study was determined as descriptive and cross-sectional and was carried out by face-to-face survey method. Between March 2021 and May 2021, smokers who applied to Bursa Uludağ University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, Smoking Cessation Polyclinic (SCP), and smoker pregnant women who applied to the Gynecology and Obstetrics Polyclinic, and those who were referred to SCP among smokers with cancer diagnosis who applied to Internal Diseases Medical Oncology and Ear Nose and Throat Polyclinics were examined in two groups. 95 people who applied voluntarily and 66 people who were referred were included in the study. Sociodemographic data questionnaire, Fagerström Nicotine Dependence Test (FNDT) and Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale (SCSPS) were applied to both groups. The sociodemographic data of the cases and the data of the survey results were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 23.0 program. The mean age of those who applied voluntarily was 43, and 49.5 for those who were referred. 41 people (43.2%) who applied voluntarily, 21 people (31.8%) who were referred quit smoking in the third month. There was no significant difference between the two groups (p=0.146). There was a significant difference between the two groups in terms of the presence of a chronic disease, the support they received in their previous smoking cessation experience, and the cessation treatments initiated by us. While the mean FNDT score of those who applied voluntarily was 6.67±1.86, the mean score of the referred individuals was 5.73±2.27. There was a major difference between them (p=0.008). An important difference was found between the two groups in terms of SBBÖÖ stability and readiness sub-dimension, SCSPS health perception and appropriate environment sub-dimension, and SCSPS total value (p<0.001). No significant correlation was found between the smoking cessation status of the participants in both groups at 3 months and FNDT and SCSPS (p>0.05). As a result of the analyzes made in our study, it was observed that the Fagerström nicotine dependence score and total and sub-dimension scores of SCSPS were higher in individuals who voluntarily applied to SCP. The difference between those who applied voluntarily and those who were referred is significant. However, no considerable difference was detected between the smoking cessation statuses at the third month. To determine the factors affecting the quitting success of all smokers, those who have chronic diseases for which smoking is an important risk factor, and those who smoke during pregnancy; it will enable us to increase the chances of smoking cessation success by providing personalized behavioral support and treatments. Keywords: Smoking Cessation Success Prediction Scale, smoking cessation.
