The effect of smoking on gingival crevicular fluid sklerosti̇n and TNF-α levels in patient with periodontitis

Smoking is actively effective in the initiation and progression of periodontal diseases and shows its effect in local and systemic ways. The aim of this study is; To measure sclerostin and TNF-a values in gingival groove fluid (DOS) samples and to reach new data on the pathophysiology of the relationship between periodontitis and smoking in the light of clinical periodontal parameters. The study group included 36 individuals who were systemically healthy, clinically and radiographically diagnosed with periodontitis (18 smokers, 18 non-smokers) and 36 periodontally healthy individuals (18 smokers, 18 non-smokers). Probing pocket depth (SCD), clinical attachment level (CAS), plaque index (PI), gingival index (GI) scores were recorded and DOS samples were taken from the patients. Sclerostin and TNF-a levels in DOS were determined by ELISA method. Shaphiro Wilk test, Mann Whitney U test, Kruskall Wallis test and Chi square test were used for statistical analysis of samples. In our study, it was found that the periodontal clinical index averages and TNF-a amounts in DOS of individuals with periodontitis were statistically significantly higher than periodontally healthy individuals. It was observed that the tnf-a values of smokers with periodontitis were higher than those with non-smoking periodontitis. There were no statistically significant differences in sclerostin levels in DOS of individuals with periodontitis from healthy individuals. According to our study, it was concluded that smoking does not have a statistically significant effect on sclerostin level, which increases the TNF-a level in DOS.
