Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah and his tafsir Min Wahyi al Quran in the context of the shii exegetical tradition: Dirayah and socio religious dimensions

This study focuses on the analysis of Muḥammad Hussein Fadlallah, one of the prominent representatives of the Shi'i tafsir tradition, and his exegesis titled Tafsir min Wahy al-Qur'an, from the perspective of the sociological exegesis school. The study consists of three chapters. In the first chapter, the life of the author, his scholarly personality, and exegetical approach are discussed, followed by an evaluation of the method, content, and use of sources in the tafsir. This chapter particularly identifies the similarities and differences between the tafsir and the sociological exegesis school in terms of methodology and content. In his tafsir, Fadlallah adopts a rational and holistic methodology under the influence of the Manar school and offers Qurʾan-centered solutions to many contemporary issues such as the construction of individual and society, politics, economics, laws of war, women's rights, and inter-sectarian dialogue. The study particularly emphasizes Fadlallah's approach to social justice, human rights, and his dynamic interpretive understanding. The second chapter deals with certain topics in Fadlallah's tafsir that can be associated with classical exegetical understanding and presents his approach to these issues. In this context, Qurʾānic sciences are primarily discussed and it is observed that Fadlallah tries to stay away from theoretical discussions and gives limited space to such matters. His perspective on jurisprudential and theological issues related to this subject is also briefly addressed. The third chapter evaluates issues that can be considered examples of the sociological exegesis aspect of the work under the title of contemporary matters. Within this framework, the author's interpretations on social political economic ethical and academic topics in relation to tafsir are analyzed and his explanations directed toward practical life are revealed. It is determined that this tafsir, written through a dynamic process of reading and interpretation, invites the reader to action and seeks to make the message of the Qur'an effective in all areas of life.
