The effectiveness of attitudes towards poetry and advance organizers on signification of poetic images

The purpose of this study is to discern the effectiveness of the attitudestowards poetry and advance organizers on signification of poetic images.Pretest-posttest experimental design with a control group was made use of inthe study. The two sophomore groups in the Social Sciences Teaching program ofthe Faculty of Education at Dokuz Eylül University formed the sample for the study.74 students (36 in the experimental group, 38 in the control group) participated in thestudy. The experimental group was given advance organizers. The data of the studywere gathered with The Attitude Towards Poetry Scale and the Achievement Testmeasuring the signification of poetic images. The data were analyzed by Mean,Standard Deviation, t-Test, and Pearson Correlation Test.Results of the study indicate the following:1. There was a statistically significant difference between the groups insignification of poetic images after the treatment. The difference was in favorof the experimental group.2. There was no statistically significant correlation between the responses ofparticipants to questions related to the surface structure and questions relatedto poetic images before and after the experimental treatment.3. There was no statistically significant difference between the experimental andcontrol groups in their attitudes towards poetry after the experimentaltreatment although the experimental group's attitude was towards morepositive. However, when experimental group's attitudes before and after thetreatment were compared within the group, a statistically significantdifference towards more positive was found.4. There was no statistically significant correlation between the attitude towardspoetry and signification of poetic images.
