The effects of propolis on nephrotoxicity in cyclophosphamide treated rats

Abstract (EN)

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects on the nephrotoxicity of propolis in cyclophosphamide (CYP) treated rats. 34 male Wistar- albino rats were used. The animals were divided into 4 groups: group 1 : control group (not treated rats), group 2: Propolis treated group (200 mg/kg/day orally for 7 days), group 3: CYP treated group (150 mg/kg i.p. a single), group 4: CYP+propolis treated group. Propolis application began before 2 days from CYP administration and continued for 7 days. At the end of the experiment, malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and plasma sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), chlorine (Cl), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), urea, uric acid, creatinine levels were measured in blood and kidney tissues. It was observed to a significant increase in MDA level, GST activity, decrease in GSH level and CAT activity in the blood and kidney tissues of CYP treated group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). MDA, GSH levels and CAT, GST activities weren't statistically significant difference in propolis and CYP+propolis treated groups when compared with the control group. It was observed to significantly decrease in MDA level, GST activity, significant increase in GSH level, CAT activity in CYP+propolis treated group when compared with CYP treated group (p<0.05). It could not be measured because GST activity in plasma can not be read. It was found to significantly decrease in plasma Na, K, Ca , Cl, Mg, P levels, increase in urea, creatinine levels while there wasn't statistically significant difference in uric acid levels in the CYP treated group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). It could not be determined a statistically significant difference in plasma Na, K, Ca, Cl, Mg, P, urea and creatinine levels in the propolis treated group when compared with the control group. It was observed plasma Na and P levels were found to be statistically significant decrease while K, Ca, Cl, urea, creatinine levels weren't statistically significant differences in CYP+propolis treated group when compared with the control group (p<0.05). In our study, increase in MDA level, decrease in GSH level, CAT activity are thought to be largely caused by oxidative stress of CYP induced nephrotoxicity. It shows can be prevented with the antioxidant property of propolis from CYP induced tissue oxidative damage.
