MODELING OF CYCLE TIME FOR SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS IN URBAN AREAS: ANKARA CASE STUDY (Ph.D Thesis) Ebru ARIKAN ÖZTÜRK GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY October 2004 ABSTRACT A significant amount of travel time is spent at highway networks with signal controlled intersections during highway transportation in urban areas. Therefore performance of urban highway transportation is closely related to the quality attained in controlling traffic signals at intersections. In design of intersection control process, minimization of performance losses due to stops and delays, and maximization of benefits to the users are targeted. Basic control mechanism used in intersection control is signal timing. In this study, a mathematical model, which incorporates local traffic conditions (hourly traffic demand, vehicle type composition) and driver behavior at intersections, is developed to estimate signal cycle time and green times for signalized intersection in Ankara.
