The turban problem in political power and sovereign media relationship

Modernization movements, which have marked the last 200 years of Turkishcommunity, have influenced many fields from politics to education. The evolvingcontinuation of the modernization makes this influence visible. In the periods of bothOttoman and Republic, the modernization of the society, the implementation of it as amodernization policy in accordance with the projects applied by political abilities todown have brought many problems along with. In the focal point of almost all theseproblems there are women.Turkish woman became both the symbol and the actor of secularmodernization in the last century of the Ottoman and especially in the first years ofthe Republic. The implementation of the modernization policy as a systematic andoverall of all fields of life state policy have been occured by Kemalism. In the periodof the beginning of the Republic reforms which dominates the big city centers, thewomen?s, who are in rural, showing themselves off i the cities together with 1960?s,have become the footsteps of the turban problem. In the process which began by thewish of the Turkish woman, who was living in her village and home previously, to takepart in the public field by veiling her head, head veiling has been made the abstractsymbol of political Islam that is becoming visible in the public field as a politicalposition. In the last period, the most challenging object against official laicism as aconfronting symbol is turban.In the first and second parts of our research, modernization movements inTurkish community have been examined and the socio economic roots of teh turbanproblem have been dealt with. The change in the society have been made by centralguidance with a political focus point instead of its own internal dinamics. The meansof mass communication have gone on assignment as the devices of this top downmodernization. In the relationship of politics-media in Turkey, this function of themedia is an important means. In this context, after AKP?s getting in alone whichcomes from the tradition of Islam, the manner taken by the dominant media againstAKP about turban problem and the results of this manner have been examined. Inthe restraints of our research, remarkable events , which have fronted about theturban problem in the first two years of the AKP power, have been chosen, the newsof Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet and YeniŞafak about turban have been dealt with as analysissubject.Our research shows that dominant media urges the subject to the level ofdeviance by their point of views to the news and processing styles and expand thisdeviance cycle while holding the compromise area as tight instead of discussing thedifferent searchs developing as paralel to social change in a wider legal ground ofdiscussing. While doing this, the dominant media uses the key concepts and wordssuch as ?the regime is in danger?, ?the soldier is uncomfortable?, ?the army to thetask?, ? public field?, ?reactionary threat?, ?laicism?. The limits of the field accepted byofficial ideology as legal, have been producing again upon the expression developedby the dominant media.Turban urged to the outer of the compromising field by the center In the periodof AKP power?s coming its first year is among the subjects considered by AKP as aproblem before powering and given as the message of ?we will solve? to the elector.However, the administrative of AKP which have taken tough response from thedominant media about turban since the first days of the power, have preferred to giveup its expression upon various attempts of it such as YÖK Bill have taken responseand the attempt of the media to put devices such as ?army? in circuit . the media thatis among the most important devices of the center, have urged the AKP powerrepresenting the environment to compromise which will be in the center and theconstitutional monarchy.
