Abstract (EN)

As an intersection of architecture and society, the city has been the site of political and economic struggles and conflicts throughout history. Therefore, the political and economic actors in the city affect and shape the urban space and architecture, also under the geographical and temporal conditions in which the city is located. Although this effect and shaping show differences specific to periods and geographies, a historical research path to be made in certain geography can be counted as a valid method for understanding today. The aim of this thesis is to reveal the effects of the political and economic actors in the city on the urban texture and architecture. Within the scope of this purpose, both a historical and a geographical limitation has been made and this relationship has been tried to be revealed in both a historical and geographical framework, which has been descended to the scale of Istanbul and Galata, respectively, from the Late Ottoman Period to the present. The historical range examined has been the Late Ottoman period, which can be taken as the origin of political westernization and economic liberalization in Turkey. The geographical range examined is limited to the city of Istanbul, which maintains its urban identity in the geography since the selected historical origin of Turkey, and whose economic, political-political and administrative importance is evident at the same time, followed by Galata, which is the region of the selected case study. The second part, which constitutes the historical presentation of the thesis, is titled according to the periods, and in each title, it is discussed first in the political-economic context, and then within the scope of Istanbul and Galata region, in a sequence following the title of the thesis. The Galata Region, which is examined in each section as a case study region, has been important on its own since the Late Ottoman period, even before the case study. The case was chosen to determine the validity of the analysis and determinations within the scope of all this purpose, and Galataport and its affiliated IRHM, which have been the focus of many discussions and criticisms in today's architecture, politics-economy intersection, were chosen in terms of both the project itself, its close environment and its relationship with the region.
