SERUM LEVELS OF INFLAMMATORY BIOMARKERS IN SCHIZOAFFECTIVE DISORDERS AND ASSOCIATION OF BIOMARKERS WITH AFFECTİVE SYMPTOMS Dr. Şengül Şahin Residency Thesis, Department of Psychiatry Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Abdurrahman ALTINDAĞ May 2013, 80 pages Objective: Elevated serum levels of inflammatory biomarkers are reported in schizophrenia, major depressive and bipolar disorder. The purpose of this study was to assess the serum levels of IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, TNF- ? and hsCRP in schizoaffective disorder and the relationship with the affective states. Method: Forty patients diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type according to the DSM-IV and 39 healthy controls were included in the study. The clinical and demographic information form was completed for all patients. Venous blood samples were collected from the patients and the control group. The serum IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, TNF- ? and hsCRP levels were assessed by ELISA method. The differences between variables were tested by multiple analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with age, gender, gender, smoking status and body mass index as covariates. Results: Serum hsCRP levels were significantly higher in patients than the control group. IL-4 levels were significantly lower than the control group. Compared to controls the depressive mood group had significantly higher levels of hsCRP and the manic mood group had significantly lower levels of IL-4. IL-2, IL-6, TNF- ? levels were not significantly different between patients and controls. Conclusion: Our results show some immunological changes in schizoaffective disorder and these changes may be related to clinical differences in the affective states of schizoaffective disorder.
