Abstract (EN)
Objective: In literature, studies point that oxidative balance in schizoaffective disorder is disrupted. But we found no study about peroxiredoxin-1 (PRX-1) and oxidative metabolism in schizoaffective disorder patients. In this study, we aim to evaluate PRX-1 levels in schizoaffective disorder patients and investigate the relation between PRX-1 level and oxidative stress level. Methods: 40 patients with schizoaffective disorder which diagnosed according to DSM-5 and 40 healthy control were conducted. In the Biochemistry Laboratory of Gaziantep University, serum total antioxidant level (TAS), total oxidant level (TOS), PRX-1 level were measured and oxidative stress index (OSI) were calculated. Results: Like most of the studies in literature, TOS and OSI were found to be higher in patients with schizoaffective disorder compared to control group. TAS levels were lower compared to control group but this difference was not statistically significant. Another important result of our study is PRX-1 levels were found to be lower in patients with schizoaffective disorder compared to control group. In literature, increase in peroxiredoxin level against oxidative stress in tissues with cancer are considered as compensation mechanism and hypothesis has been established. In light of these studies, we emphasize that antioxidant mechanism against oxidative stress does not function enough in schizoaffective disorder patients. Our study is the first study in the literature which investigate PRX-1 level and relation between oxidative parameters in schizoaffective disorder patients, so our study can make significant contributions to the literature. Key words: Schizoaffective disorder, Peroxiredoxin-1, Oxidative stress.
