Abstract (EN)

This research was conducted to examine the effectiveness of motivational interviewing techniques on self-care ability and life satisfaction in schizophrenia patients. Research; It was conducted in a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study design with a control group. The research was conducted at Elazığ Psychiatric Hospital between January 2020 and June 2022. The research was completed with a total of 78 patients, including 39 experimental patients and 39 controls, who were diagnosed with schizophrenia and met the inclusion criteria. During the research, 4 sessions of motivational interviewing techniques intervention, each lasting 40-60 minutes, were applied to the experimental group patients. Survey forms consisting of the Personal Information Form, Life Satisfaction Scale and Self-Care Power Scale prepared by the researcher were used to collect the data. Kolmogorow-Smirnov, Shapiro-Wilk test, number, percentage, mean, chi-square and t test were used to evaluate the data. In this study, the mean Self-Care Power Scale pre-test score of the patients in the experimental group was 84.89±13.12, while the mean post-test score was 100.94±4.25. The difference between the Self-Care Power Scale pretest score average and posttest score average was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). The mean Life Satisfaction Scale pretest score of the patients in the experimental group was 5.28±2.15, and the mean posttest score was 11.38±2.48. The difference between the Life Satisfaction Scale pretest score average and posttest score average was found to be statistically significant (p<0.05). When the mean scores of the Self-Care Power Scale and Life Satisfaction Scale post-test scores of the experimental and control group patients were compared, it was determined that the difference between the groups was statistically significant (p <0.05). As a result, it can be said that motivational interviewing techniques intervention has a positive effect on life satisfaction and self-care ability in schizophrenia patients. With this result, psychiatric nurses can be recommended to add motivational interviewing techniques to the holistic care plan.
