Abstract (EN)
The aim of this research is to determine the misbehaviors in the classroomenvironment, approaches to prevent such behaviors and student and teachers?opinions on the effectiveness of them.Class teachers worked in primary schools in Sakarya in 2005-2006 AcademicYear and fifth graders constitute the research field. 10 teachers and 20 students wereinterviewed in the research. Students and teachers were selected according toexcessive and skew samples. Semi-structured and teacher-student forms are used inthe interviews.The research was conducted qualitatively. Only the researcher had gathereddata in the research. Data gathered in the research were analysed with ` ContentAnalysis? approach.According to research results, the misbehaviors in the classroom environmentwere as follows: speakings of the students among themselves during the lessonwithout permission ( distracting the lesson), quarrels, not participating in the classactivities ( not listening to the lesson), not obeying the rules ( disrespectfulness), notdoing homework, being indifferent to the lesson, being intrested in other things,grumbling each other, swearing, being late to the class, telling lies, being keepingextremely silent, being untidy, misusing school equipment, carrying harmful andprohibited things, cheating, and not being self-confident.According to students and teachers, the approaches put into practice byteachers to overcome misbehaviors were: giving responsibility ( charging), givingadvice, and warning, using eye contact and mimics, communicating with students ina positive manner, Seating in the front lines ( changing groups), supportingcooperation with the parents ( home visits), preparing the class rules with students,denying misbehaviors (iIndifference), having students participate in the activities,having students feel themselves important, using ?I? language, motivating thestudents, Increasing the number of the materials, asking open-ended questions,behaving in the same way, telling the effects of the behaviors with examples,frightening, scolding, threatening, walking around, punishing, doing activities,organizing meetings.Moreover, students and teachers found the followings effective to overcomemisbehavior: ? preparing the class rules with the students?, ? meeting the students?expectations?, ? cooperation with School Principals and Guidance Councelors?, ?paying attention to the attitutes and behavior?, ? supporting cooperation amongteachers?, ?predicting students? behaviors?, ? organizing the classroom?, ? holdingclassroom meetings?, ? supporting school cooperation with parents?, ?doing suitableactivities for students?, ? providing learning experiences from the daily life, ?supporting active participation in the lesson?, ?students? group activities?.Key Words: Misbehaviur, Preventing approach
