Water harvesting techniques applied in Somalia: Current situation, problems and suggestions

Abstract (EN)

Water harvesting techniques can improve good access to water for crop and livestock production and domestic purpose of the family in Somalia. It can also mitigate all flood risks and reduce water waste in urban areas in the country by increasing groundwater recharge, reducing water scarcity; this research focuses on the Water Harvesting Techniques applied in Somalia and addresses the current problem to suggest the potential system of water harvesting techniques. The climate of Somalia is mainly arid to semi-arid. The inter-Tropical Convergence Zone's north and south movements determine Somalia's climate (ITCZ). The instrument of this study is a questionnaire that is used to gather information on questions related to the research. The design used in this research is called descriptive statistics which allows you to do research efficiently so it was chosen in this study to ensure the information and situation are presented to the population and find a solution. Most farmers focused on the old water harvesting techniques used in the past, which is a normal shallow well and salty shallow wells resulting in water scarcity. 138 people took part in the survey, most of them were the level of high school graduates and likely between the ages of 32 and 38 and 60.1 percent of respondents were men. The findings of this research study show that there are some challenges in the country including little technique or knowledge of water harvesting techniques and no one cares about the dam when the silt fills up in the dam. The solution to these problems is that people have to be learned knowledge of the water harvesting techniques and give training and demonstration to be experts who can do it on their own.
