Abstract (EN)

Water is one of the basic needs for human, but its availability and the ability to access is difficult for rural areas in most of the developing countries including Somaliland. It is not only difficult for rural areas but also the water supply for Somaliland's urban centers is difficult due to the lack of a modern electricity grid. Somaliland is well endowed in wind and solar energy resources; it has one of the highest rates of daily total solar radiation in the world. Therefore, well designed and sized standalone Photovoltaic (PV) water pumping systems are the best alternative solutions for remote areas and even urban centers in Somaliland for water requirements. This thesis introduces the design and sizing of the PV water pumping system in Hargeisa to meet the needs of water for a small garden that uses 7.5m3 of water daily. The First part is the introduction, the literature review and the scope of the thesis. Followed by a discussion of the water requirement assessment and the different technologies used in solar-powered water pumping systems. The second part of this thesis is the collection, the analyzing and the correcting of the data. The data was collected from PVGIS and NASA then compared with ground-based measurements and developed CPN (Corrected PVGIS and NASA) data. Using PVSyst software panels and pumps are selected according to water usage. Its simulated different designs and sizes for comparisons. The last part of this thesis is the results with the discussions and the suggestions.
