Ottoman-Skopje ulama in the late Ottoman Period (1839-1913)

The aim of this study examine ulama's profile in the late Ottoman Balkans. In order to create a constant for the study, a group of ulama, consisting of names such as madrasa teachers, judge (naib-kadı) and müfti who were born and served in Skopje was determined. Skopje was preferred because it is in intergrity with Ottoman ilmiye. The main source of study Ulema Sicill-i Ahval Files in the Şeyhülislamate Archives (Meşihat Arşivi) in İstanbul. Information such as place of birth, efect of family background, early education, İstanbul as an educational center, modern school education, salary, the knowlodge of language was obtained from this sources. With this information the education level of the ulama in Skopje and Rumelian madrasas was revealed. In addition, the political and administrative history of the city followed chronologically. In fact, Rumelian is one of the geographies where political events frequently ocur in the last period of the Ottoman Empire. Among the mentioned ulama's group names effective in these evenys were found. The last period of Rumelian provinces, where concepts such as constitutionalism, nationalism, language and culture have become widespread is examined with this study in case of Skopje ulama's. The connection of the local ulama with both the puclic and the state was emphasized. This research reveals how unkonwn names shape region under their influence.
