Opinions of 7th grade students on environmental literacy skills in social studies lesson

The aim of the social studies course is to raise citizens who are beneficial to their country, country and humanity. In order to achieve this goal, it is aimed that students know and use their rights on the environment, get to know the environment they live in, know its characteristics, have a mutual and healthy interaction with the environment, and use science and technology in a way that is suitable for sustainable development. In addition, it has aimed that individuals, as a social entity, will be sensitive to events and problems that will adversely affect themselves and their environment, and that they will actively participate in the solution of these problems by giving the awareness that they are a part of this world. Today, environmental problems have started to take a universal dimension from the locality. If we gain a positive attitude and awareness towards the environment in the local dimension, rational solutions can be produced for environmental problems in the universal dimension. For example, since greenhouses are common in the Kumluca district of Antalya province, the use of chemical pesticides increases and as a result, the dimensions of soil and water pollution increase. In this context, the aim of this study is to reveal the views of 7th grade students on environmental literacy skills in the social studies course. In this study, a case study model based on the qualitative research approach was used. For this purpose, a total of 42 students were interviewed in 6 middle schools in the Kumluca district of Antalya province. In the research, a semi-structured interview form, one of the qualitative research techniques, was used, and first of all, the participants were informed about the research and volunteerism was followed. The questions were first asked to the participants through a written interview form, and then the same questions were asked to the participants by audio recording and an attempt was made to get answers. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis technique. As a result of the research, the students' types of environmental pollution, environmental problems of the world, Turkey and Antalya province Kumluca district, global warming, renewable and non-renewable energy, consequences of environmental pollution, diseases caused by environmental pollution, non-governmental organizations protecting the environment, measures against environmental pollution and environmental problems. It has been determined that they have sufficient knowledge about the importance of cleaning.
