The effect of memory supporting strategies on academic success and permanence in social studies lesson

The main purpose of this research is; The aim is to examine the effect of a learning environment in which activities prepared based on memory-supporting strategies are used within the scope of the 7th grade Culture and Heritage unit, on students' academic success, their attitudes towards the Social Studies course, and the permanence of learning. As a result of the study, it is aimed to make the learning process more efficient by determining the usability of memory-supporting strategies. A mixed design in which qualitative and quantitative methods were used together was used in the research. In the research, quasi-experimental design was used as the quantitative research design, and content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. A total of 32 students, including 16 experimental group and 16 control group students, studying at two different public schools in Horasan district of Erzurum province during the 2022-2023 academic year, constituted the study group of the research. SPSS 20.00 package program was used to analyze the quantitative data obtained in the study, and content analysis was used to analyze the qualitative data. The quantitative data obtained as a result of the research show that there is a statistically significant difference in the academic achievement levels of the students of applications based on memory-supporting strategies in favor of the experimental group. In this context, it can be said that the use of applications based on memory-supporting strategies will be effective in increasing academic success in the Social Studies course. According to the qualitative results of the research, it was determined that the experimental group students expressed positive opinions that activities based on memory-supporting strategies were fun, memorable and facilitated learning. When looking at the effects of the applications on the attitude towards Social Studies course, it was concluded that the results were not statistically significant. Based on the findings obtained as a result of the research, it is recommended that activities based on memory-supporting strategies be used in the Social Studies course.
