In social studies students and teachers opinions on the training of cultural heritage

Find out how much importance is given to the cultural heritage in Social Sciences, the opinions between students and teachers is the most important point. This research has been made working throughout the analysis of content, qualitative. This research has been made at 15 secondary schools in Ankara, between the years 2013-2014. This research is from a point of opinions of 40 students from 7th grade and 34 Social studies teachers. Interview questionnaires which are comprised of 10 open ended questions for teachers and students to respond were composed. Results about the knowledge and awareness levels of teachers and students on the subjects were gained from the responses given to these questions. As a result of this research it is seen that both the students and teachers have given great importance to cultural heritage in Social studies and think that it is an important point. However it is obvious that, the use of cultural heritage in application is not satisfying and should be taken care of and be protected and is also not at the position that has always been wanted. It was concluded that use of images, posters, presantations will help teach the lessons about cultural heritage more efficiently. Indeed, some teachers and students expressed their opinions that it would be more efficient to make visits to museums and other relevant places. According to the research, it was seen that teachers and students had general information about the cultural heritage. According to the opinions of students; cultural heritage is past lives, cultural values and past works. According to the opinions of teachers; cultural heritage is moral and material values of a nation from past to present, works from past to present and the whole values taken from the whole civilizations. According to the opinions of teachers and students; the opinion that the main methods and techniques used in the application of the education of cultural heritage are textbooks and presentation method became prominent. In the case of increasing and enriching the methods and techniques used, it was seen that the education of cultural heritage would be more meaningful. According to the opinions of teachers, the result that the subjects and education of cultural heritage in the program of Social Sciences were not sufficient was come out. It was come to conclusion that the subject of cultural heritage would be able to be taught by the arrangements and enrichments in the program especially.
