Teachers' opinions on the sufficiency of the social studios course in the context of earthquake education

Abstract (EN)

Purpose: To examine teachers' opinions about the adequacy of the social studies course in the context of earthquake education. In this study, answers were sought to the questions "Is it sufficient to provide earthquake education in the social studies course? If not, what can be done to increase its adequacy? Method: In this study, qualitative research method and semi-structured interview technique were used. The study group of the research consisted of social studies teachers working in secondary schools of state schools in Adıyaman province in the 2023-2024 Academic Year. Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interview form prepared by the researcher on the predetermined day and time. Audio recordings were taken in the interviews about the adequacy of earthquake education given in social studies class, then the audio recordings were transcribed into text and divided into themes and categories. Total frequencies were determined by finding the number of times the categories were used. Frequencies and percentages of the categories were found. Interview texts divided into themes and categories were divided into percentage slices by creating tables using the Excel application. Findings: All participants stated that the earthquake education given in the social studies course was insufficient. Participants stated that all institutions and organizations responsible for education should work to make the necessary arrangements to eliminate this deficiency. Result: It has been revealed that the earthquake education given in the social studies course is not sufficiently included in the curriculum. Therefore, it has been concluded that the information given in earthquake drills training in earthquake training is insufficient regarding earthquake preparedness, fulfilling responsibilities as a state and society, informing and raising awareness of the society against disasters, especially earthquake disasters. In line with these results, studies can be carried out to help the state develop new and applicable policies regarding earthquake disasters. In line with these results, the necessity for the state to develop new and applicable policies for earthquake education has emerged.
