The status of material use in social studies courses: Istanbul province case

Abstract (EN)
This study is carried out to determine the material and technology situation of Social Studies teachers in class. For this purpose, the answer is searched for the question "What is the state of using materials and technology in the classes of Social Studies teachers who work in secondary schools?". This research was carried out with general survey model. The universe of the research consists of Social Studies Teachers working in the secondary schools of Istanbul Province in the academic year of 2018-2019 and administrators in these schools. The case includes randomly determined 9 districts from 39 districts of Istanbul. In the research, the data were collected through a questionnaire which was applied to Social Studies teachers and school administrators. The questionnaire forms were applied within the 2018-2019 academic year. The results obtained from data collection tools were analyzed by using SPSS package program. The personal and professional information obtained from the questionnaire applied to the teachers and the frequency of using the material / technology and the reasons for not using them are presented in an order by calculating the frequency (f) and percentages (%). In Chi-Square (X²) test was used to test whether there is a correlation between the frequency of materials use that social studies teachers used in their lessons and gender, education level and length of professional service. As a result of the research, it is seen that different technologies are used in Social Studies courses in secondary school. The most used technology is smart board and computer, and the least used technology is slide machine. 84.2% of these technologies are used by students, while 8.5% are used for management purposes and 7.3% are used by teachers. In addition, the 54% of them were in good condition, 42.4% were in very good condition and 3.6% were in bad condition. In terms of teachers' use of materials and technology, 30.5% of teachers say that they never use them and 12% of them use it all the time. Considering the reasons why teachers do not use materials and technology is due to lack of material and technology were not in school was thought by 67.7% of teachers, 15.9% of the teachers did not use them because the material and technology were not in the classroom, and 12.4% did not recognize the material / technology, 2.2% because the physical facilities of the school are not suitable, and that the remaining 0.5% did not use material / technology as the material / technology was unavailable. When the acquisition of materials is evaluated, it can be seen that only one fourth was obtained as ready (26.4%), while the majority were obtained through associations, contributions, cooperatives and donations. The results of the χ2 (chi-square) analysis of secondary school social studies teachers that the frequency of material / technology use differ in terms of gender, shows that female teachers use material / technology more frequently than male teachers. The results of χ2 (chi-square) analysis, which differs in terms of educational status, shows that teachers who are graduated from the faculty of education use more frequently material / technology. The results of χ2 (chi-square) analysis, based on the terms the length of professional seniority, shows that teachers who have 5-10 years of professional experience use more frequently material / technology.
