Abstract (EN)

In this research, The Effect of Using Photographs in Social Studies Teaching on Academic Success and Attitude çalış was tried to be determined. For this purpose, pretest – posttest matched control group quasi-experimental design was used. This study is limited to the Journey in Turkish History unit in the curriculum of the 7th Grade Social Studies course of the Education Board of the Ministry of Education. This study was carried out with 40 students in the 7th grade of secondary school. These classes were randomly selected as 7-A (20 students) control group and 7-B (20 students) experimental group in the experimental group, the teaching activity in which the photographs were used effectively was applied, and in the control group, the teaching activities in the 7th Grade Social Studies textbook prepared by the Ministry of National Education Board of Education were processed with the traditional method. The application lasted for 8 weeks. Pre-test was applied to the experimental and control groups before the application and post-test was applied at the end of the application in order to measure the students' achievement and attitude towards the course. Data related to the research were obtained with achievement test and attitude scale form. For academic achievement data, achievement test consisting of 28 questions related to 7th grade Yolculuk Journey in Turkish History "unit developed by Yaylak, (2010) was used. The Social Studies Attitude Scale, developed by Demir and Akengin, 2010) was used to measure students' attitudes towards the course. Data obtained from the study SPSS / PC (Statistical Package for Social Sciences for Personal Computers) computer program was used for statistical analysis. The data collected by the research was transformed into a data set using this program. Independent groups t-test, Mann Whitney-U Test and Wilcoxon test were used for data analysis. When the findings were evaluated; It was observed that there was a significant difference in favor of experimental group in terms of academic achievement of students, and there was some increase in favor of control group in terms of attitudes towards Social Studies course. In this study, it has been concluded that the use of photographs in the teaching of Social Studies course increases students' academic achievement and has little effect on attitudes.
