The place of political literacy skills in social studies teaching and social studies teachers' views on this skill

In this study, first of all, the place of the concept of political literacy in the 2018 Social Studies Course Curriculum will be tried to be found out. In the second part of the study, the views of the Social Studies teachers that are referred to on Political Literacy are included. This research was carried out in the 2021-2022 academic year. The study group of the research consists of 30 social studies teachers working in public secondary schools in Istanbul. The study was designed according to the qualitative research approach. Research data were collected with "Document Analysis" and "Semi-Structured Interview Form", and qualitative data were handled according to content analysis. Based on the findings obtained in the research, it was determined that political literacy skills were sufficiently included in the 2018 Social Studies Curriculum. However, according to the results of the interviews with the teachers, it was concluded that the participants did not have sufficient knowledge about political literacy skills, and they were not sufficient to participate in social activities within the scope of active citizenship. In the light of the obtained results, some suggestions are presented.
