Evaluation of social studies and class teachers? opinions about social studies lesson in terms of several variables

This study explores teachers? opinion considering the method, goal, and content of social studies. This study is based on Survey model, processed by using qualitative and quantitive method together.The part of study which requires survey is presented descriptively. Opinions of participants about the goal, method, and content of social studies are determined in this part. The data is collected with the help of interview which is one of the qualitative data collection techniques. Collected data is analyzed descriptively. Samples of this study are selected between social studies teachers and elementary teachers who work in the city of Kayseri.This study had took place two different groups of sample teachers. In the process of collecting quantitive data, 444 social studies teachers and elementary teachers who are currently working in Kayseri, were conducted. In addition to this, 89 teachers from the same majors were conducted for the qualitative part of data.Quantitive data is collected in 45 questions with ?Approaching Social Studies Subject Scale? which was developed by Barr, Barth and Shermiss (1978) and adopted into Turkish by Ersoy Kozan. Qualitative data was collected with a interview form of 8 questions that was created by researcher.In conclusion of the study, teachers from both gender do not indicate significantly difference in goal, content and method of Social Studies Thought as Citizenship Transmission, Social Studies Thought as Social Science, Social Studies Thought as Reflective Inquiry Approaches. In other words, all teachers mainly state the same point of view, whereas Method of Social Studies Thought as Citizenship Transmission indicates a significantly difference in terms of gender of teachers who were chosen in the study. However, considering majors, fields of study, and the graduated universities of teachers, a significantly difference draws our attention in their point of views. Future recommendations are presented in the light of the findings of this comprehensive study.Key Words: Social Studies, Social Sciences, Reflective Inquiry, Citizenship Transmission, Elementary Education.
