General profiles of undergraduate students in social studies and turkish language teaching (A case study from Fırat University and Marmara University)

Abstract (EN)

Profiles of teacher candidates who will shape the future of the society that we live in are significant indicators that present the level of development of the current education system and the social structure in short and medium terms. Detailed researches are being made on student lifestyles and profiles in different European countries. For example, organisations such as DSW in Germany, RUI in Italy and OVE in France periodically publish undergraduate/graduate students' profiles, and they also identify students' problems and demands as well. This research aims to analyse overall profile of students who study Social Studies Teaching and Turkish Language Teaching and to provide several contrasts in accordance with the six goals set by the researcher. The survey created by taking experts' opinion into account has been carried out on 776 teacher candidates who are the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students in Social Studies Teaching and Turkish Language Teaching in Firat University and Marmara University. Data from the survey has been individually controlled and transferred to a SPSS platform, and percentage, frequency and chi square rates have been analysed. In the research general scanning model has been applied by using maximum variation sampling. As a result of this research, it has been found that the teacher candidates in Social Sciences Teaching in Firat University almost never attends to the panels or conferences during the academic year comparing to the teacher candidates in Turkish Language Teaching. It has been seen that the teacher candidates in Turkish Language Teaching in Marmara University are not satisfied with their university as much as the teacher candidates who are studying Social Science Teaching in the same university. It has been seen that mothers of the teacher candidates in Social Sciences Teaching in Firat University are rather employee comparing to the mothers of the teacher candidates in Turkish Language Teaching. The level of foreign language proficiency of the teacher candidates in Turkish Language Teaching in Firat University is quite lower than the teacher candidates in Turkish Language Teaching in Marmara University. It has been found that the female teacher candidates who are studying Social Science Teaching in Firat University watch TV programs such as drama/film or entertainment/magazine more than the male teacher candidates. It has been found that the male teacher candidates who are studying Turkish Language Teaching read mostly political books comparing to the female teacher candidates.
