Examining the relationship between fear of missing out and psychological well-being and locus of control

Abstract (EN)

This research was carried out to investigate the relationship of university students' fear of missing out with psychological well-being and locus of control. The research study group consists of 620 students in their first year at Erzincan Binali Yıldırım University in the 2018-2019 academic year. 304 (49%) of these students are male and 316 (51%) of them are female. In the study, Personal Information Form, BAPI Internet Form, Fear of Missing Out in Social Environments Scale, Psychological Well-Being Scala and Rotter's Internal-External Control Focus Scale were applied as data collection tools. The data analyze has been done by checking whether the data obtained by study is suitable for parametric or non-parametric statistics (normality distribution and skewness-kurtosis) before the analyze phaze. As a result of the analysis, it was determined that the data did not show normal distribution and the data set was suitable for non-parametric statistics. In the consideration of the data analyses, the research was carried out by using relational scanning model which is a sub-genre of general scanning model. Within the scope of the findings obtained in the research; a positive and weakly significant relationship was found between fear of missing out and locus of control. A negative and moderately significant relationship was found between fear of missing out and psychological well-being. Also, it was determined that internet addiction and psychological well-being predicted the fear of missing out significantly. In addition, 441 students scored 30 and above on the fear of missing out scale. 490 students have external locus of control. Most of the students have external locus of control and feels fear of missing out. On the other hand, it was determined that the scale scores differ significantly according to some demographic variables. In the last part of the study, the findings obtained were discussed, suggestions were made according to the results achieved and future research.
