Germany's foreign policy towards China in the Merkel period within the context of constructivism theory

It is observed that diplomatic relations between Germany and China have become more active in the period that coincides with the detente phase of the Cold War period, in parallel with the relations between the West and the East bloc. It is remarkable that until the 1970s, the limited relations between the two countries gained momentum since 1970 and today the relations between Germany and China are evaluated at the level of strategic partnership. It is possible to say that the economic ties and other material capacities, which is shaping the basis of the relations between the two countries, were an important position that determined the political atmosphere and the course of the relations until the Merkel government came to power in 2005. When considered from the perspective of Social Constructivism theory, from a Merkel period, through a culture based on ideas such as the establishment of democracy called as European and Western values and beliefs, the rule of law and the promotion of human rights, in which the relations established over the material capacities of Germany in China have maintained its importance. The existence of a normative ground in German foreign policy towards China is remarkable. In this context, in the conclusion part of this study reached that the Merkel period Germany's Chinese policy was aimed to be directed through the social structures established in accordance with the European and Western values that affect Germany's identity, and in this sense, the Merkel period differed significantly from the previous periods.
