Abstract (EN)

In this thesis the problems of users regarding "flexibility" and "being and staying flexible" will be examined in case of social housing which has developed very rapidly after the industrial revolution. Along with the innovations in solution strategies produced in the last century , new flexibility opportunities in the social housing also be examined by taking into consideration the case projects designed or applied successfully from 1990's until now, with reference to the thesis title "current". In the first chapter, in order to understand the solutions on the "flexibility in social housing ", the conceptual frame is determined and questions are asked to define the problem. Thus the chapter is based on definitions which are the work's goal, content and formation. In the second chapter, concept of flexibility in architectural design will be examined with a literature review. Concept of flexibility, theories that are related to flexibility, architectural flexibility and dwellings, users and designers as actors that provides architectural flexibility, factors that effects flexibility of design and definition of flexible house and participation theories will be examined in this chapter. Third chapter is based on the definition of social housing and a review for the historical development of flexibility through social housing. Definition of social housing and the typologies in social housing will be examined in four different periods in order to explain historical development. In the fourth chapter, case projects between 1990 and up to now, mostly from European countries and from other regions of world will be examined how the concept of flexibility is designed or applied with strategies and methods that explained in previous chapters of this study is the aim of this case study. The fifth chapter includes the evaluations and outcomes about the importance, necessity and improvement of flexibility on social housing regarding, the projects which studies as case and the conceptual framework.
