Abstract (EN)

This study was carried out to determine the influence of sleep education supported and unsupported with social media reminding on the sleep quality in adolescents aged 14-18. The sample was constituted by 60 students who selected randomly from three Anatolian High Schools. The students were divided into 3 groups which each one has 20 people. The sleep education group, which is unsupported by social media reminders, was given sleep education at school for 30 minutes a week for 4 weeks. In addition to the education at school, informative messages and remindings were sent to the sleep education group which is supported by social media reminders. Apart from taking measurements about sleep parameters once a week to the control group, no intervention was made. The data were collected by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Cleveland Adolescent Sleepiness Questionnaire, Adolescent Sleep Habits Form and MI BAND 3 device. This study was completed with total of 55 adolescents. At the beginning of this study, there was no difference between the groups in terms of demographic characteristics, subjective sleep quality, daytime sleepiness and sleep hygiene (p>0.05). At the end of this study, subjective sleep quality and daytime sleepiness scores of teenagers in sleep training, which is unsupported by social media reminders, decreased (p<0.05). While the subjective sleep quality score of teenagers in sleep education which is supported by social media reminders decreases according to the beginning, the sleep hygiene score increased (p<0.05). No significant change was observed in the control group. At the end of this study, no significant difference was found between the groups in terms of subjective sleep quality, daytime sleepiness, sleep hygiene, total sleep times, deep and mild sleep levels, sleep division, night bedtime and morning waking hours (p>0.05). As a result, it can be said that both sleep education is an effective method in increasing the subjective sleep quality of adolescents. Keywords: Adolescent, education, social media, sleep
