The relationship between social media fatigue, cognitive flexibility, and academic procrastination

Abstract (EN)
In today's digital age, university students face the dual pressures of academic responsibilities and the constant interaction and intense information flow from social media platforms, which deplete their mental resources. This phenomenon, termed social media burnout, is a psychological syndrome that can lead to a loss of attention and motivation, laying the groundwork for academic procrastination—the intentional delay of academic tasks. Cognitive flexibility, defined as the capacity to adapt and develop alternative solutions in response to changing conditions, may play a crucial role in mitigating these negative processes. Accordingly, this study aims to comprehensively investigate the relationships among social media burnout, academic procrastination, and cognitive flexibility in university students. The research seeks to elucidate the complex dynamics of the digital age on student psychology by revealing the direct relationships between these variables. The study employed a quantitative, correlational research design. The participants comprised 416 associate and undergraduate degree students from Sakarya University and Sakarya University of Applied Sciences during the 2024-2025 spring semester, selected via convenience sampling. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Social Media Burnout Scale (Gündoğan, 2022), the Academic Procrastination Scale-Short Form (Balkıs & Duru, 2022), and the Cognitive Flexibility Inventory (Sapmaz & Doğan, 2013). Data were analyzed using parametric and non-parametric statistical methods, including Pearson and Spearman correlation coefficients, independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, one-way ANOVA, and Kruskal-Wallis H test. All analyses were conducted using JASP 0.19.1 software. Regarding the primary research question, a statistically significant, low-level positive correlation was identified between social media burnout and academic procrastination. A significant, low-level negative correlation was found between cognitive flexibility and social media burnout, whereas no significant relationship was detected between cognitive flexibility and academic procrastination. With respect to the first sub-problem, students' social media burnout levels were found to be at an "occasional" level across all sub-dimensions (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, indecision). On the indecision dimension, male students and associate degree students scored significantly higher than female and undergraduate students, respectively. Social media burnout did not differ significantly by class level, nor was it significantly correlated with age or academic grade point average (GPA). Concerning the second sub-problem, students' academic procrastination levels were also identified in the "occasional" category. Procrastination levels did not differ significantly by gender, level of study, or class level, and showed no significant correlation with age. However, a significant, low-level negative correlation was found between GPA and academic procrastination. For the third sub-problem, students' cognitive flexibility was generally at an "appropriate" level. Male students scored significantly higher than female students on the control dimension and the total cognitive flexibility score. The total cognitive flexibility scores of associate degree students were significantly higher than those of undergraduate students, and fourth-year students' scores were significantly higher than those of third-year students. Cognitive flexibility was not significantly correlated with age or GPA. The findings indicate that social media burnout, experienced at a moderate level, reflects the psychological cost of intensive engagement with digital platforms. Similarly, the moderate level of academic procrastination suggests it is a common self-regulation failure among university students. The positive correlation between social media burnout and academic procrastination suggests that the mental fatigue induced by digital platforms may trigger avoidance of academic tasks. The negative correlation between cognitive flexibility and social media burnout highlights its protective role against digital stressors, while the absence of a direct link between cognitive flexibility and procrastination confirms the multifaceted nature of procrastination. Based on these results, recommendations for practitioners include implementing workshops on conscious social media use, psycho-educational programs to enhance cognitive flexibility, anti-procrastination pedagogical strategies, and campus activities that promote non-digital interactions. For future research, longitudinal designs to establish causal relationships, structural equation models to test for mediating roles, comparative studies on different platforms, and experimental studies to assess the effectiveness of intervention programs are recommended.
