Abstract (EN)

Technological advancements have opened the doors to a digital world, leading to the emergence of new communication methods through social media platforms. The new form of communication on social media networks, particularly among individuals of similar ages, can cause confusion in understanding. The digital world has given rise to new concepts in society, resulting in the use of new words, changing meanings, abbreviations, and visual materials in Turkish language to express these concepts. These changes can cause differences in meaning between the intended message and the interpretation of some language users due to differences in grammatical structures. Such differences can have a negative impact on effective communication and make it difficult for individuals to communicate via social media. To prevent potential negative consequences in communication, the new expression forms created by language users through social media and their usage should be examined. Therefore, this thesis first focuses on the history of communication, developments that change the form of communication, social media, social media networks, and the differences in meaning created by social media. A literature review was conducted, and the theoretical framework of the study was determined, with a focus on the impact of social media on intergenerational communication. Then, the process of expressing Turkish phrases in social media tools and how meaning is conveyed was explained. A survey was conducted on social media users from various age groups to determine how their age, profession, and status affect the differences in interpretation on social media. The data obtained from 300 social media users were analyzed using SPSS software. The conclusion section shows the differences in meaning that arise among social media users and defines the concept of "meaning" created by the new communication language. Keywords: Turkish Language, Language, Social Media, Social Media Networks, Meaning.
