Evaluation of botilinum Toxin-A in the treatment of spasticity

Spasticity is complex disease that can induce an important disability in a group of patients. Spasticity is a dysfunction due to generalized/localized cerebral or spinal pathology of upper motor neuron lesions. Botulinum Toxin is preferred in the treatment of various diseases excessive motor neuron activity like spasticity. Long term but reversible effect, easy application, favorable solidity and low side effect profile makes Botulinum toxin - A a first choice in pharmacological treatment of focal spasticity.In this study, 30 patients who are in follow-up in Celal Bayar University Medical Faculty Neurology Department, that have focal spasticity were evaluated retrospectively. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of Botulinum-A Toxin in the treatment of spasticity.In our study, we applied measurements reflecting the clinical situation, Btx-A treatment is effective in all patients with stroke, cerebral palsy and heredodegenerative diseases. We observed that significant decrease in muscle tonicity and pain, it has has a great effect in functional recovery. As a result Btx-A has an significant effect in the therapy of spasticity in various aspects such as: increasing quality of life, positive feeling, additive to the physiotherapy and decreasing the need for the other medical drugs.
