Abstract (EN)

This research aims to reveal the correlation between smartphone addictions and motivation to participate in physical activities of Faculty of Sport Sciences students. It is intended to examine whether there is a significant correlation between smartphone addiction and motivation to participate in physical activity according to age, gender, departments and licenced sports status. The Smartphone Addiction Scale established by Kwon and modified into Turkish by Noyan, as well as the Physical Activity Motivation Scale developed by Demir and Cicioğlu, were applied to 461 volunteer students in the relational screening approach. Pearson correlation analysis was employed as a statistical method in the evaluation of study data. Frequency, percentage, distributions, independent sample t-test for paired groups, one way analysis of varience for multiple groups were used to determine the association. In the difference tests, the significance level (p) was taken as 0,05. As a result of study; all participants' motivation to participate in sports are determined to be high. When smartphone addiction examined according to the demographic variables, the 18-21 age participants are more motivated in comparison with 22-25 age participants. Female participants' motivaton to engage in physical activity is higher than male participants according to the gender variable. According to department variable; recreation department students are highly motivated, sports management department students' motivation is on the low level and coaching department students on the low level. The coaching department's students have a high level of smartphone addiction, whereas the sports management department's students have a low level of addiction. When the data was analyzed using the sports licence variable, smartphone addiction and physical activity engagement are higher among licensed athletes than among non-licensed athletes. Moreover, a negative association was discovered between the participants' smartphone addiction and their motivation to engage in physical exercise.
