A quantitative approach for forming sport team: A case of Basketball team

In today's developing sport economy, the establishment of effective sports teams in an increasingly competitive environment provides great financial gains to the clubs. this study focuses on the basketball sport which is the most popular second sport in the World, and considers the establishment of a basketball team. Creating an effective basketball team for the purpose of the work suggests a mathematical approach to determine the basketball players to be included in this team. In the proposed approach, the problem of effective tool generation is solved by designing as a multi-objective integer linear programming problem model. For this, the factors to be used in evaluating the performance of a successful basketball team have been identified. Afterwards potential players who may be in the team were determined and a pool of candidate players was formed from these players. Pool Located in the statistical data corresponding to specific performance factors of these players Turkey Basketball Federation and Turkey were obtained from the first club basketball league. In addition to the statistical data in the study, the evaluation criteria were used as a result of negotiations between the team managers and the administrative managers in the clubs and teams with the head coaches for a subjective factor which is among the factors used in the evaluation. As a result, the selection of the basketball team has been made with two objctive integer programming linear programming. The first priority in the model is to maximize the "team fit" while the second is to minimize the "cost". The multi-objective linear programming model to be constructed for the determination of the first five players of the team has been solved in two steps by means of the Excell Solver. The results obtained from the study suggest that the proposed mathematical model can be used to create an effective team.
