Risk management at sport: Sample of handball super league in Turkey

There are risks of different sizes from the decision taken in all kind of matter in our everyday life to the management activities. The objective of this study is to determine the risks perceived by sportsmen and coaches in the clubs of Handball Super League in Turkey, to determine the levels of the risk impact and to ensure ordering principally of the risks which are the most critical. Furthermore, it is to compare the relationship of the risks determined with some demographic variables and emphasize the importance of risk management at sport.General screening model which is one of the descriptive methods was used in this study. Research group was consisted of 376 sportsmen and 45 coaches actively involved in the clubs of Handball Super League in Turkey.Gok's (2006) survey of risk identification at sport for sportsmen and coaches and Cobanoglu (2008) and Gok's (2006) risk assessment scale at sport were used as a data tool in the study. SPSS 15.0 for Windows package program was used for statistical analysis of the research data.As a result of the research; it is determined that coaches have perceived the risks at higher level than the sportsmen in the sub-dimensions of risk assessment scale at sport. While sportsmen do not perceive the risks at the critical level in the articles of risk assessment scale at sport; they indicated that they severely affected by the risks relating to finance and social security management, affected as medium by risks relating to health and facility management. It is precipitated that coaches critically affected by the risks relating to financial management, severely affected by the risks relating to health and social security management, affected as medium by the risks relating to facility management.As a result these results, it is precipitated that handball clubs have troubles relating to risk management and they have not an effective risk management which may protect sportsmen and coaches.
