Chronological assessment of the usage of tensile roof structures in stadium buildings

The architectural identity has recently come to the forefront in the implementation of stadium buildings. Stadium buildings, which have become urban objects for the cities in which they are built, have been changing forms with the development of the structural systems. When stadium structures are considered as a whole, a harmonious architectural building shows up environmentally. The roof forms become more important than the facade surfaces of the structure and bring them an architectural qualification. In this study, the roof structures which have an important place regarding design and application are examined. Moreover, the samples of different roof structures and materials were compared. This study especially investigates roof construction systems, roofing materials, long span and roof weight. The aim is to observe the changes and developments of the stadium structures sampled by during the period from 1950 to the present day in chronological order. The purpose and content of the work is explained in the introduction. In the second chapter, the stadium terms are defined and the historical development process is being explained. Among the selected examples, the definition and historical development of the prominent stadium structures are being quoted under a separate title. In the third chapter, roof structures of stadium buildings are being examined. The long span systems are being studied and the structure systems which are used in the examined examples have been mentioned. In addition to this, materials which are widely used are selected from the membranes covering the structures and information about their properties are given. At the end of this section, the membranes were being compared according to their physical and chemical properties. In the fourth chapter, selected examples of stadium structures are being investigated. General information about constructions is being given, roof structures are being examined in detail and chronological order is being sorted. In the fifth chapter, the roof structure of the stadium structures is compared. The structures of the stadium buildings are evaluated by comparing the vertical structure of the reinforced concrete and the steel vertical structure. In section six, results and evaluation are explained. In the sample stadium structures examined, the effects of the carrier systems and materials used on the roof structure are mentioned. The advantages offered by the roof structure systems are being explained.
