Society and women's relationship in Suat Derviş's works

This thesis examines the literary works of Suat Derviş, who was among the female writers of Turkish literature in the Republican Period, especially by referring to the social and cultural connections between society and women. In general, Derviş, who believes that art is a social duty and that the main purpose of literature requires human centered understanding and discourse, asks important questions about the sociocultural relations between society and women and claims that problems such as sexism, colonialism in home and work life, physical, psychological violence and sexual abuse that women are exposed to are related to society. Thus, Derviş, who has a strong belief that women and society should be evaluated by being examined together, does not hesitate to produce many thematic literary works that combine this idea. Suat Derviş, who showed an attitude towards the reduction of women in society, thoughts and practices by shaping the traditional norms and rules in the various elements she presents in her works, with the effects of the patriarchal structure, brought a different perspective and a new breath to our literature in this aspect. Thus, through the eyes of a woman writer, the society she lives in and the problems of her compatriots have been synthesized by relating them with various angles and concepts. Another issue emphasized in the study is the social criticism created by Suat Derviş in her literary works. Especially in these critical approaches, which she performs by addressing the problems of female heroes, the focus of the elements presented about the traditional aspects of society includes the escape of female heroes from social norms and norms and their efforts to become individuals. In this context, in the first part of the study, the life and literary personality of Suat Derviş, in the second part, the phenomenon of women in Turkish society and Turkish women in the first half of the 20th century, last part of the century, the effects of the relationship between society and women were studied in the works of Suat Derviş.
