A study on localization movement in the 'Hamse' of Subhizâde Feyzî

Besides classical metaphorical statement and image system, certain content and wording renewals draw attention in the Old Turkish Literature covering the period between 13thcentury and 19thcentury. The historical and social disintegration occurred in the Ottoman Empire between 17thand 18thcentury has also a significant effect on these changes expressed through different names such as movement, style etc. The most striking one of these changes has been "localization", the movement which was more significantly observed after the 17thcentury although it was also seen during the previous periods. Localization which may be described as more-intensely addressing the social and local issues than before has brought a breath of fresh air to our ancient literature which evolved out of a necessity and got into a vicious circle. This renewal process experienced constitutes the change created without completely eliminating the old one and moving off its circle of influence. This is named "reproduction" in this field of social sciences. This thesis study primarily provides information about the 18thcentury Ottoman Empire that we believe have a direct relation with the evolution of localization in the Ottoman Divan poetry and its course of history. We think that this is a necessity in terms of our thesis topic in order to detect traces of localization. Following this section, localization was discussed through its theoretical and historical aspects in our old literature. Following these sections constituting the preparation phase for our thesis topic, the Hamse of SubhizâdeFeyzȋ composed of 1 divan and 4 masnaviswas discussed in terms of the localization movement. The Divans and masnavis contained in Hamse (Heft Seyyâre, Mir'ât-ı Sȗretnümâ, Safânâme and Aşknâme) were examined under different headings and the local elements identified were exemplified. The study conducted was limited to the content size of localization.
