The comparison of some biochemical parameters in criminal and noncriminal schizophrenic patients

In psychiatric disorders because of its various characteristics, schizophrenia is interesting and the most studied psychiatric disorder. It is supposed that some biochemical parameter levels are effective on aggressive behaviours and committing crime in schizoprenic patients. In this study we aimed to evaulate the differences of serum levels of some biochemical parameters in criminal noncriminal schizophrenic patients as comparative on the effects of crime.This study included 50 noncriminal schizophrenic patients and 50 criminal patient who had at least one crime record and taken schizophrenia diagnosis according to DSM-IV in Elazığ Psychiatry and Neuropathies Hospital. Sociodemographic knowledge form is applied to the patients. At the right time by taking into consideration of hunger and being full situation blood samples were taken from patients who were appropriate to the study criterias and control groups at the morning 08.00?11.00 a.m. On these blood samples serum total cholesterol, triglycerid, HDL, LDL, VLDL cholesterol, total and free testosterone, estradiol, sex hormone binding globulin, zinc, copper and ghrelin levels had been studied.It is found that serum triglycerid, VLDL, LDL cholesterol, total and free testosterone, copper and ghrelin levels of schizophrenic patients are higher than noncriminal patients. However, it is fixed that serum total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, estradiol, sex hormone binding globulin and zinc levels are lower in criminal schizophrenic patients.Our findings showed that the levels of some biochemical parameters are important in terms of crime inclination on schizophrenic patients. For using activity of this parameters as reliable, it is needed further studies. Especially, in terms of cholesterol, testosterone, estradiol, sex hormone binding globulin, zinc, copper and ghrelin we think that useful results will be taken in the future.Keywords: Schizophrenia, cholesterol, testosterone, ghrelin, crime.
