This thesis offers three chapters on the link between economic growth and crime rates. Chapter 1 seeks to investigate convergence of homicide rates in EU. Focusing on modernization theory, the chapter also investigates conditional convergence by using income per capita and unemployment rates as control variables. The findings based on GMM regressions demonstrate substantial evidence of homicide rate convergence within the EU. Chapter 2 explores the existence of Homicide Kuznets Curve (HKC) in new EU member countries by using FMOLS, DOLS, and PMG methods. Using modernization and civilization theories, the chapter also attempts to theoretically explain the existence of Kuznets curve in homicide rates of new EU member countries. Finally, Chapter 3 examines how high and increasing inflation affects crime rates. To address this question, this essay investigates inflation-crime rates nexus for Turkey, using a large dataset from 26 subregions over the period 2006-2020. The results of the system GMM approach reveal the positive impact of inflation on homicide and robbery in Turkey, while inflation has no statistically significant impact on theft rates. Findings also suggest that GDP per capita is a quantitatively important factor. Hence, the results are consistent with the modernization theory.
