ABSTRACT Master Thesis SPECTOPHOTOMETRIC DETERMINATION OF N02- in WATER By 4-(l-METHYL- l-ARYLCLCLOBUTANE-3-YL)-2-AMINOTHIAZOLE Fatih POLAT Firat University, Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences, Department of Chemistry 2003, Page: 42 In this study, spectrophotometric determination of NO2" in water by 4-( 1 -methyl- 1- aryIcyc!obutane-3-yl)-2-aminothiazole was realized (performed). Optimum working conditions of the developed method in the application on water samples were determined and in the analysis optimized parameters were used. The azo dye, 4-(l -methyl- 1 -mesitylclclobutane-3-yl)- 2-(p-N,N-dimethylazobenzene)-l,3-thiazol] was synthesized with the reaction of 4-(l -methyl- 1- mesitylclclobutane-3-yl)-2- aminothiazole and N,N-dimethyl aniline in acidic medium. Obtained azo dye has been characterized by IR, *H NMR and microanalysis methods. By scanning the tool, the maximum absorption wavelength of azo dye was found lo be 482 nin. All the determinations were realized at this wavelength throughout the work. Same reactants were added to N02' standard solutions in acidic medium and necessary optimum working conditions were adjusted again. Since the resulting product İs not soluble in water, it has been extracted into chloroform and the absorption of the solution was measured from this solution in each case. The optimum working conditions are pH:2, reaction time: 15 min., the amount of reactant: 1.5 mL, respectively. To eliminate the interferences 1 mL of 1% EDTA solution was added to every analysis solution. The developed method for N02' determination in water samples here was compared to Gres Method which is accepted as standard method for the NO2' determination in water.
