Abstract (EN)

THE REMOVAL OF CADMIUM POLLUTION FROM WATERS IN PACKED BEDS BY ADSORPTION (M.Sc.Thesis ) Hasan KOÇYİ?İT GAZI UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF SCINCE AND TECHNOLOGY September 1999 ABSTRACT By the development of industrial activities, there has been an increase of heavy metal pollution in surface waters. During biological purification processes, the heavy metals have high toxic effects especially on the microorganisms. Apparently, the heavy metals accumulating within the plants watered using agriculture waters, and within the aquatic living things cause an accumulation in human beings. Because of this reason, the treatment of heavy metals from wastewaters that will be used in biological treatment as well as the purifications of releasing water to the environment gains importance. In this study, the removal of cadmium pollution using packed adsorption columns has been investigated. Diatomite, beige sepiolite and valoniacron {Que reus ihaburensusis Decne Subsp Macrolepis Hedge-Yali) have been used as adsorbents. While studying the cadmium removal using packed columns, the effects of parameters such as the bed length, concentration, temprature, pH and rate of feed, were investigated. Âs the result of the study, 4,2-145,2 mg/g, 54,2 mg/g and 49,9 mg/g of cadmium adsorption have been determined for acorn bark, beige sepioiite and diatomite. respectively.
