Examination in terms of Decoration of the Mushaf No. 2 at Kılıç AliPasha Collection of Süleymaniye Library

The art of illumination is a deep-rooted and ancient art that had been going on for centuries. With the Turks' acquaintance with Islam and seeing the Mushaf (Qur'an) as their holy book, it had become the main artistic performance ground where the craftsmen would show all their skills. They both wrote the Qur'an in the most beautiful way and surrounded it with precious ornaments and a cover (binder). In the mushafs, decorations are applied on the areas called zahriye illumination, superscription illumination, sura head illumination, rose, stop and kataba page. Each artwork, which we describe as a manuscript, is unique in itself and is a magnificent product of its time. The subject of this research is the examination of the Qur'an with inventory number 2 in the Kılıç Ali Pasha Collection of the Süleymaniye Library in terms of illumination art. Regarding the examined Qur'an, apart from a thesis with imprint information, no source was found in which it was discussed in this sense. By analyzing the ornamental elements of the Qur'an, which is the subject of the thesis prepared by us, researchers who are interested in the art of illumination were given the opportunity to introduce another manuscript with more visual data and patterns. First of all, other sources were obtained about the artwork with inventory number 2 in the Kılıç Ali Pasha Collection of the Süleymaniye Library. The artwork has 265 double-page scanned visual file data. The decorated areas consisting of superscription, sura heads and roses in these pages are limited as the scope of the research. The general research on the subject was carried out with the document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research approaches. After the visual data obtained were examined in detail, plan and pattern drawings were made. The ones belonging to similar plan schemes in the sura head illuminations, and all the data obtained, grouped, are presented together with their evaluations. It is aimed to contribute to the literature by recording it as a source that contains the information about the understanding of art of the period and making it accessible data. The prepared thesis consists of three parts. First Part: Mushaf Illumination, Binding and Decoration Techniques, Second Part: Examination of the Mushaf with inventory no.2 the Kılıç Ali Pasha Collection of the Süleymaniye Library in terms of decoration, Third Part: Typology. The thesis ends with conclusion, bibliography, appendices and curriculum vitae.
