Language education of Syrian refugees: A comparative study between Turkey and Germany

The aim of the study is to compare the language education of Syrians refugees in Turkey and Germany after the 2011 Syrian events; in terms of language policies, integration programs, curricula, used textbooks, language teaching methods and techniques and exams, and based on the data obtained as a result of this comparison, offer suggestions for solutions to the problems experienced in teaching Turkish as a foreign language to refugees or immigrants coming to Turkey is. In the study, in which the multiple case study method was used, the language policies, adaptation programs, curricula, textbooks, teaching methods and techniques and language exams produced for refugees in both countries were examined by document analysis technique. In addition, interviews were held with field experts and students in Turkey and Germany. As a result of the research, due to the open door policy implemented in Turkey, since there is no information about the demographic information of the refugees who came to Turkey in mass, the necessary policies for language education of these refugees and accordingly qualified language teaching programs, qualified textbooks couldn't be produced; neither appropriate teaching nor measurement and evaluation methods and techniques were available. The common problem in both countries is the need for qualified trainers and the problem of implementation.
